Self-Employed Health Insurance: Things to Consider

Today, more and more people are going to work for themselves. With the economy in bad shape and more businesses shutting down everyday, it’s a great way to have the income you need to pay your bills and survive. However, it can be very difficult acquiring health insurance when you work for yourself. It can be extremely costly and hard to find a company willing to cover an individual.

If just one family member of the family is self-employed and the other works a public job, then usually the one will take out family insurance from their employer to cover the whole family. But what happens when both husband and wife are self-employed or when the one working a public job gets laid off or terminated? The insurance will also be terminated at this time. There are many public jobs that don’t offer health insurance and some in which the rates are so high that employees can’t afford it.

Still, you need health coverage in order to get the treatment you need when sick and for preventive measures to help keep you and your family as healthy as possible. When self-employed and seeking health insurance, here are a few things for you to consider:

• Determine what type of coverage you need that would suit your individual needs the best.
• Get a quote from several different insurance agencies and find out what type of coverage they offer the self-employed.
• Compare the different companies and look for the one that offers the best coverage for less.
• Having a higher deductible can help to reduce your overall premium making this type of insurance coverage more affordable.
• Consider getting together with other self-employed people to buy group health insurance so you can purchase it for a cheaper rate than what you’ll be offered as an individual.
• Look for associations that are designed to bring people who are self-employed together so they can purchase group insurance.
• Look for insurances companies with a good history and that are large enough to fulfill their obligations in the event you do need them at some point.
• Do your research before you choose an insurance company to learn more about them and their history. Look for complaints and anything else you can find to help you make a good decision.

Although price is a big issue, it’s not the most important thing to consider when seeking out medical insurance coverage and you’re self-employed. If the rates are cheap but the coverage isn’t enough to protect you or the company can’t fulfill their responsibilities, they won’t be very beneficial to you.

It’s possible to get temporary health insurance coverage if you don’t have a sturdy income or if you plan to have insurance coverage from a spouse in the near future. This will give you the coverage you need now without the long-term commitment.
